I am going to stay with family in San Francisco and my mom let it slip that I am starting to cook. They are very, erm, well off. They enjoy the finer things in life, including fine food. I can basically cook casseroles. Not that there isn’t any thing wrong with a good casserole, but they aren’t exactly casserole people. So I am looking for good recipes for fine food that aren’t super hard to do and that don’t involve a bunch of really exotic ingredients. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Firstly, it’s important that you be honest with the SF family, explaining that you are still very much a beginner and that so far your repertoire consists mainly of casseroles (which, by the way, is not uncommon for beginning cooks, regardless of whether they are “well off”). Otherwise, their expectations may be too high for a beginner such as yourself to live up to.
