Pokemon soul silver help?

MY boyfriend currently has Pokemon soul silver, he loves Pokemon. He has played basically all of the games except heartgold. Since he has beaten soulsilver, should I get him heartgold for Christmas? or would it be a waste. Are the games really similar? or is it a different story and such?

Its a waste since there are only a few differences between the games and they have the same basic storyline.
